India-born cheetah gives birth to 4 cubs
Bhopal, April 12 -- A 25-month-old Indian-born cheetah gave birth to four cubs at the Kuno National Park, marking the first recorded cheetah birth in the wild at the sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, officials said on Saturday.
"The cheetah who gave birth to the litter on Saturday is an offspring of the South African-born Gamini. Both of them were released into the wild in 2025. The former went her separate way after September 2025," said Uttam Sharma, the park's field director. Forest officials called it a significant step toward achieving the core objectives of the project-survival and breeding under natural conditions.
"The cheetahs have already adapted to the wild and roam freely, but mating and cub births in the wild mark a significant milestone. This is the first time an Indian-born cheetah, raised in the wild, has given birth outside an enclosure. Earlier, Mukhi, the first Indian-born cheetah, gave birth in captivity, as both she and her cubs were confined to an enclosure," Sharma added.
Reacting to the development, Union Environment and Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav wrote on X, "A historic moment unfolds at Kuno National Park as an Indian-born female Cheetah of Gamini, aged 25 months, has given birth to four cubs in the wild, marking a major milestone in India's cheetah conservation journey."
He added, "This achievement reflects the growing adaptation of cheetahs to Indian conditions and stands as a testament to the dedication and tireless efforts of the managers, veterinarians, and field staff at Kuno."
Currently, Kuno National Park is home to 57 cheetahs with 31 Indian-born cubs , the officials said....
