MUMBAI, Aug. 13 -- Five senior citizens were injured when a gazebo collapsed on them in a public garden in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion, on Wednesday evening. Two sustained leg fractures, while most of them suffered head injuries. The seniors, aged between 64 and 79, were seated under the gazebo - a roofed structure on pillars - when it suddenly gave way in Mala Garden. The injured, three women and two men, were enjoying an evening out due to a break in the rain when the incident occurred. Local residents allege that complaints to the BMC about repairs to the gazebo had been ignored as recently as a couple of months ago. The garden is one of four managed by the BMC in the neighbourhood and had become popular among residents following renovations only a few years ago. Wednesday's crash took place at around 4.45pm. Others in the garden rushed to the aid of the injured seniors and administered first aid until ambulances took them to the civic-run Sion Hospital. The injured are: Dhondiram Ghopkar, 65, Ganpat Ambole, 79, Pramila Jadhav, 68, Laxmi Shitliya, 65, and Sunita More, 64. All of them are in stable condition. Dr Pramod Ingale, dean of Sion Hospital, said one of the seniors, a woman, had discharged herself against medical advice after receiving basic treatment, while the others were admitted to the hospital. "Some have fractures while others have minor head injuries. We are performing CT scans on all the patients as a precaution," said Ingale. Sameer Ambole, son of Ganpat Ambole, said his father visited the garden every day. "He suffered a head injury and a fracture to his leg," he said. Locals say the garden was visited by more than 150 locals daily. It has a walking track, a children's play area and the plants are tended to with care. However, residents say they had flagged issues with the gazebo with civic officials. Asha Shinde, 44, who regularly visits Mala Garden, said, "During a visit by a civic official in May, I pointed out that the roof was leaking last year. I followed up with local civic officials but no action was taken." Another resident, Vasant Gavhale, 68, said other structures too need attention. "My wife visits this garden every evening after 6:00 pm. There's another structure that is leaking and needs to be checked," he said....
