Female auto driver assaulted in Virar over queue dispute
Mumbai, March 11 -- Four people, including an auto-rickshaw driver, were arrested for allegedly assaulting a 37-year-old female auto driver after she objected to him picking up passengers out of turn at a share-rickshaw stand in Virar East on Monday night.
Police said the victim, Siddhi Satarkar, confronted the accused Amol Mhatre after he allegedly started taking passengers without waiting in the queue.
An argument ensued, following which Mhatre and three accomplices allegedly pushed, kicked and pulled her hair, police said.
The accused allegedly also threatened to smash a rock on her head. Other auto drivers tried to intervene but failed to stop the assault.
The injured woman was taken to Sanjeevani Hospital, where she was admitted with multiple injuries.
"We have arrested Mhatre and his associates for assault and rioting. The case is being investigated with the help of eyewitnesses and CCTV footage," said Lalu Ture, senior police inspector of Virar police station.
Local social worker Sushant Pawar noted that such conflicts among auto drivers, over queue-cutting, are a recurring issue in the Vasai-Virar region, often involving drivers with political backing....
