Fallen plate leads cops to hit-and-run accused
MUMBAI, May 26 -- A 21-year-old college student, who rammed a Mercedes Benz he was driving into police barricades on Marine Drive and seriously injured a police constable, has been arrested on charges of attempt to murder and remanded to police custody.
The hit-and-run took place when Nihal Arjun Solanki, 21, refused to stop his speeding car after police signalled for him to pull over at around 5:00am on NS Road near the Garware junction along Marine Drive, on Sunday.
The panicked youngster fled the scene but was tracked to his home in Virar more than 12 hours later thanks to the number plate that fell off his car when it hit the barricades. Police said they used the registration details of the car, a second-had luxury vehicle purchased by Solanki's family last year, to trace him. The car has been impounded and is at the Marine Drive police station.
According to police, Solanki, a final-year undergraduate student studying computer science in a Virar college, was out for a long joy ride at Marine Drive when the incident took place. Blood samples have been taken from Solanki to check whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The report is awaited but police said the samples were taken only after Solanki was tracked down several hours later.
Marine Drive police said constable Krishnakant Mishra and a Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) jawan were carrying out checks at a police checkpost on the north-bound lane along Marine Drive when the accident took place. "The two tried to get the speeding Mercedes to stop. Instead, the driver of the car struck both the barricades and the police personnel, who were tossed some distance from the site," said an officer with the Marine Drive police. "The driver didn't stop to help the injured men and drove away."
While Rathod was discharged after being treated for minor injuries, Mishra suffered injuries to his spinal cord, head, hand and thigh, said the police.
Solanki has been arrested and booked under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 125 (acts recklessly in a way that endangers human life or personal safety), 281 (rash or negligent driving) and 324 (mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, said the police officer.
Solanki was produced in court on Monday and remanded to police custody until Thursday....
