MUMBAI, July 12 -- Seven men posing as police officers allegedly extorted Rs.55 lakh from a 24-year-old Angadia businessman at gunpoint after luring him with the promise of a lucrative business deal. The victim, Khushpal Mohan Singh, a resident of Bhuleshwar, was allegedly lured into a business deal and told that the accused wanted to transfer Rs.55 lakh through Angadia services. According to police, Singh and his friend, Vikram Mahavir, reached Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Road in Kalinaon Friday to finalise the deal, where seven men were waiting for them. "The accused identified themselves as police personnel, threatened the complainant and his friend at gunpoint and forced them to transfer Rs.55 lakh through online transactions," said a police officer. After the money was transferred, the group fled the spot. The complainant later approached the nearby police station after the accused claimed to be posted there, but found that no officers by the names given by them were attached to the station. Realising he had been duped, Singh lodged a complaint with the police. A case has been registered under sections 308(extortion), 204(personating a public servant), 127(wrongful confinement) and 351(criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
