New Delhi, Oct. 3 -- India's coffee exports, which are growing fast, will get a further boost from the operationalization of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) from Monday, making Indian coffee competitive in the bloc of four countries , Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein, the commerce ministry said. India's coffee exports jumped 40.37% to $1.8 billion in 2024-25 from $1.29 billion in 2023-24. Commerce secretary Rajesh Agrawal said value addition in coffee is happening, with entrepreneurs entering areas like instant coffee, specialty coffee. While inaugurating the coffee experience zone and expo of the Coffee Board on the occasion of International Coffee Day on Wednesday, Agrawal said, "Indian coffee is sustainable" and coffee exports from India have doubled in recent years. He stressed on the need for greater diversification in the area of coffee cultivation. According to the Coffee Board, India is the seventh-largest coffee producer globally . India's major competitors in the international market are Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia and Uganda. The commerce secretary also highlighted the growing domestic market. "With a fast-rising middle class, increased domestic consumption of coffee is only a matter of time," he said. Domestic consumption of coffee has increased from 84,000 tonnes in 2012 to 91,000 tonnes in 2023. Thursday's event comes ahead of the operationalisation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), providing opportunities for Indian coffee to access European markets.
