Driver, passenger killed as gas tanker crushes auto in Thane
Thane, July 9 -- Two people were killed and another was seriously injured after an industrial gas tanker overturned onto an autorickshaw on Ghodbunder Road in Thane on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the tanker driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a pedestrian and fled the scene after the crash.
The deceased were identified as autorickshaw driver Dashrath Pawar and passenger Mohammad Ameen, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Another passenger, Amjit Ansari, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a nearby hospital.
According to police, a woman was crossing the road near D Mart in the Kasarvadavali area when the tanker driver allegedly swerved left to avoid hitting her. However, the vehicle lost balance and overturned onto the autorickshaw.
The tanker carried about 29 tonnes of industrial gas, trapping the autorickshaw's occupants beneath it. Rescue teams deployed three cranes to lift the overturned tanker and extricate the victims.
Vijay Kumar Sarnaik, Assistant Police Inspector (API) of Kasarvadavali Police Station, said, "Two persons lost their lives in the accident, while one injured person is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The tanker driver is still absconding."...
