MUMBAI, March 5 -- The death toll in the Chembur construction site accident climbed to three on Wednesday after a 22-year-old worker died of injuries sustained in the fall. Gunadhar Rai, one of six labourers who fell from an under-construction building on February 28 after a wooden plank gave way, succumbed at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion. Rai, a native of Dumka in Jharkhand, had moved to Mumbai a year ago and had been working with Aditya Raj Builders for the past four months, said his co-worker Nemlal Rai, 28. Hospital officials said Rai was brought in with grievous injuries to his left leg and was gasping for breath. Doctors had described his condition as critical, suspecting a severe spinal injury that carried the risk of paralysis if he survived. At the time, they indicated his chances of recovery were slim. Four days after the incident, Gunadhar succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. His family is expected to reach Mumbai on Thursday to claim the body. The mortal remains will be taken to their native village in Dumka for the last rites, Nemlal said.
