Death toll in Sikkimtunnel collapse at 22
India, July 23 -- The toll in the collapse of an under-construction at the Teesta Stage-VI Hydel Project in Sikkim's Namchi district increased to 22 on Wednesday as rescuers recovered ten more bodies from the site, officials aware of the details said. "The death toll has climbed to 22," said Sonam D Bhutia, Namchi superintendent of police. The incident took place on Monday at Adit 3 of the tunnel - at least 1.5 km from the mouth of the tunnel - which is part of the 500 MW hydel project of NHPC Ltd. NHPC said a sudden burst of suspected methane gas trapped/embedded inside the rocks led to the explosion, generating dense fumes and toxic gases. Rescuers, who went inside the tunnel looking for trapped survivors, described the tunnel as pitch-dark, hot, full of poisonous gases and muddy. "Conditions are very bad inside.
