MUMBAI, July 10 -- The BMC has terminated the membership of AIMIM corporator Roshan Shaikh from Ward 138 (Govandi) after her caste certificate was declared invalid by a caste scrutiny committee. According to a notification issued by the BMC on Wednesday, the District Caste Certificate Scrutiny Committee, Parbhani, invalidated Sheikh's Other Backward Class (OBC) caste certificate on April 27, 2026. The certificate, which had been issued in November 2025, was reviewed and subsequently held to be invalid. Sheikh had been elected in the 2026 BMC elections from a seat reserved for the OBC category. Following the scrutiny committee's decision, the civic body invoked Section 16(1C)(a) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, under which an elected representative automatically loses membership if the caste certificate on the basis of which they contested from a reserved seat is declared invalid. The BMC notification states that Sheikh's councillorship stands terminated with effect from April 27, 2026-the date on which the scrutiny committee delivered its decision .
