MANGALURU, Oct. 1 -- A contract worker was killed and 12 others were injured, including one who suffered 35% burns, after a blast at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited's (MRPL) Coker Hydro Treating Unit in Surathkal on Wednesday, officials said. Emergency personnel subsequently brought the fire under control. The explosion occurred at about 12.20 pm when the unit's cold separator, operating at a pressure of about 70 bar, ruptured, said Dr Rudolph VJ Noronha, chief general manager, corporate branding and corporate communications, MRPL. MRPL's emergency response and firefighting teams isolated the affected unit and brought the blaze under control, he added. The deceased was identified as Manish Karkada, 23, a contract worker from Mulki, Dakshina Kannada district. Noronha said Karkada was reported missing after the explosion and his charred body was found several hours later. Rajesh Baptist, another worker, suffered burns over about 35% of his body and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in Kankanady.
