Congestion at port disrupts cargo movement
Mumbai, May 22 -- Severe congestion at Nhava Sheva Port has disrupted cargo movement and increased financial pressure on importers, with trade bodies and companies seeking urgent intervention from port authorities.
According to importers, terminals such as Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) and Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) are facing operational delays due to factors including driver shortages, logistical disruptions, rising LPG costs, the ongoing Middle East conflict and the West Bengal elections. Containers are reportedly piling up inside port premises as terminals are unable to hand them over on time despite vehicles being arranged for evacuation.
Importers alleged that heavy ground rent and storage charges are being imposed because of the delays, even though the situation is beyond their control.
Shipping lines are also allegedly withholding delivery orders until the charges are paid, further delaying cargo clearance and movement to warehouses and factories.
Importers have demanded waiver of storage charges and immediate steps to decongest the port and normalise cargo evacuation. htc...
