CJP to begin agitation today, demands CEC's resignation
MUMBAI, Oct. 2 -- Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), announced a nationwide agitation launching from Mumbai on October 2 to contest alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. Dipke demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and urged greater accountability in the Election Commission's (EC) functioning.
Speaking at a media interaction in Mumbai on Thursday, Dipke outlined the CJP's three core demands: the immediate resignation of CEC Kumar, freezing the electoral roll compiled in 2025 to conduct upcoming elections on that basis, and establishing a transparent, independent selection mechanism for appointing future Election Commissioners that incorporates civil society participation.
The protest is scheduled to launch at 4 pm near Gate No. 6 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park on Gandhi Jayanti in Mumbai. The campaign will move through various regions, including Goa and Kolkata, before concluding with an indefinite sit-in at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi until CEC Kumar steps down.
However, Mumbai police denied permission for the gathering, citing ground restrictions, lack of municipal clearance, and noise and traffic concerns. Following this, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned that proceeding with the unauthorized protest would result in a three-day jail term prior to bail. Dipke countered with Fadnavis's famous 2019 pre-poll catchphrase, "Mee punha yein" (I will be back), asserting that even arrest would not stop the movement and that supporters will not back down.
Emphasising that the demonstration is a non-partisan citizens' initiative, Dipke requested that participants refrain from bringing political flags or banners. He reaffirmed that the CJP is not allying with any political party. Dipke asserted that public confidence in the electoral system has dissolved, criticising roll revisions and claiming the government dictates who remains listed.
He further alleged that the EC functions under executive influence, pointing out that nearly 13 crore voters-roughly 14% of the electorate-have been removed since 2024.
He noted this gap matches the vote-share difference between the NDA and INDIA bloc in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, alleging that removing such numbers predetermines outcomes.
Additionally, Dipke criticised the SIR of voter lists as a threat to franchise rights, describing current democracy as merely illusory. Pointing out that CEC Kumar was appointed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, he stated they must dismiss him or risk public anger turning against themselves.
He also welcomed support from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and insisted the CJP will remain strictly independent....
