MUMBAI, July 31 -- Mumbai recorded two deaths due to leptospirosis at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri in the last two weeks. One of the victims was a 35-year-old man who worked in a grocery store and is believed to have been exposed to flood waters. The other victim is a 59-year-old woman. "She habitually walked barefoot to a temple and may have been exposed to flood waters," said infectious disease specialist Dr Tanu Singhal with the hospital, which received five cases of leptospirosis over the last month, including the two who succumbed. Leptospirosis is a common bacterial infection linked to rodents, particularly during the monsoon. Mumbai received heavy rain causing severe waterlogging and flooding on June 24, and over the weekend of July 5-6 Mumbai registered 157 leptospirosis cases until July 14, against 136 during the corresponding period last year, according to the BMC.
