Mumbai, Aug. 7 -- Suraj Kumar Chand became the first Indian men's singles gold medallist in the FISU World University Squash Championship after beating Hungary's Benedek Takacs in the final at the Somaiya Vidyavihar University here. A former student of the same university, Mumbai-based Chand beat Takacs 5-11, 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 11-4 in a thrilling five-game title clash. The 25-year-old, who won bronze in 2024, is bound for the Asian Games starting next month in Japan. In the women's singles final, Spain's Marta Dominguez Fernandez defended her title with a 11-3, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Hong Kong's Ching Hei Fung. The win carried extra significance as it came on her father's birthday. The tournament, bringing together student-athletes from 14 nations, now shifts to the team event beginning Friday....
