Car plunges into canal; 2 of family dead, one missing
PUNE, April 4 -- A car carrying a Thane family plunged off a bridge into the Nira canal, about 230 km from Mumbai, on Friday, leaving a woman missing, her parents dead, and her estranged husband, allegedly sleep-deprived at the wheel, as the lone survivor. As the couple were in the process of getting a divorce, police are also investigating if there was any foul play.
The incident occurred around 5am as the family was travelling in an Ertiga from Mumbai towards Solapur.
The deceased have been identified as Hanumant and Manjula Jathar, 58 and 48. The search is on for their daughter, Priti Tilekar, 30, who is feared to have been swept away by strong currents. Priti's husband, Sunil Tilekar, 33, a Kalamboli resident who was driving the car, survived.
