MUMBAI, April 19 -- Kamlesh Gupta, builder, has been booked by Navghar Police after a deadly fire tore through over 50 shanties in Bhayandar's Indralok area on April 10, killing three people, including two children. Officials said the accused had built and rented out the huts on encroached land without basic fire safety measures. The fire, which broke out in the congested slum cluster after three gas cylinders exploded, quickly spread, leaving dozens homeless. Fire brigade officials confirmed that the structures lacked any preventive systems. Police registered a case against Gupta under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on statements from residents and hutment owners. "We are trying to trace Gupta currently," a police officer said. The site had earlier been allegedly subject to mangrove destruction and illegal land-filling. A case had already been filed against 11 individuals under the Environment Protection Act in 2024. However, residents claimed that municipal authorities took no action despite prior complaints about the illegal settlement.
