Bhopal dowry death: CM seeks CBI probe; second postmortem denied
Bhopal, May 21 -- The Madhya Pradesh government said on Wednesday that it will write to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over probe into the death of a 32-year-old former model and actress, who was found dead at her Bhopal residence on May 12, even as a Bhopal district court rejected her family's plea for a second post-mortem examination.
The 32-year-old woman was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal's Katara Hills area on May 12, months after her December 2025 marriage to the 33-year-old accused, whom she met on a matrimonial site in 2024.
Based on the victim's family's allegations of systematic torture and murder over dowry, police had on May 14 booked her husband and his mother, a retired judge, under sections 80 (dowry death) and 85 (cruelty against a married woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha (BNS).
The woman's parents had moved the court seeking a second post-mortem examination of their daughter at AIIMS Delhi, alleging lapses in the investigation by police, and expressing apprehension that a person related to her in-laws could have influenced the procedure conducted in Bhopal. On Tuesday, assistant commissioner of police Rajneesh Kashyap Kaul said the ligature report of the victim has confirmed that she died by suicide by using a belt.
However, hearing the matter on Wednesday, judicial magistrate First Class Anudita Gupta said: "There is nothing on record which indicates any collusive or suspicious relationship of accused persons & the medical team of AIIMS Bhopal who conducted the post-mortem. Videography of first post-mortem was done. Case is not triable by this court." The court also said that it cannot order a post-mortem examination outside its jurisdiction.
The body is currently kept in the mortuary at AIIMS Bhopal at -4 degC, but it needs to be kept at -80 degC for longer preservation and "there is no facility available anywhere in Bhopal for low-temperature preservation", the court noted. The victim's advocate, Anurag Shrivastava, claimed that there was delay in informing the family about her death and alleged that the police and administration were attempting to destroy evidence....
