Amazon, Blinkit workers seek relief after FDA shuts stores
MUMBAI, Aug. 19 -- The Maharashtra labour commissioner's office has ordered an inquiry into the loss of livelihood of workers at Amazon and Blinkit warehouses after FDA action led to their closure. The FDA raided the warehouses on June 24 and suspended their licences on July 1 over hygiene violations.
The inquiry follows complaints by Platform App Based and Other Commerce Workers Union general-secretary Dr Laxman Mane, who highlighted the plight of hundreds of workers, including pickers, packers and gig workers. Deputy labour commissioner (enforcement) CB Jagtap has directed officials to investigate and submit a Labour Situation Report. Workers are demanding 50% wages, compensation and continuation of benefits during the closure.
Union president Dharmendra Kumar said workers are entitled to half their wages without losing benefits such as EPFO, increments, leave and seniority under the Industrial Relations Code, 2020. An Amazon spokesperson said it was working with its staffing partner to ensure employment continuity. Blinkit did not respond. The union welcomed the intervention and warned of a Thane collector's office march if dues remain unpaid by Oct 15....
