All-rounder Kemp flips the script as England beat India to level T20I series
Chandigarh, May 31 -- Just when India seemed to have England where they wanted them in the second women's T20I, Freya Kemp arrived to change the script.
The young all-rounder produced a stunning late blitz with the bat before returning to chip in with crucial wickets as England defeated India by 26 runs at Bristol on Friday, levelling the three-match series 1-1.
For nearly 18 overs, the contest belonged to India. England's innings never quite gathered momentum despite starts from Danni Wyatt-Hodge (29), Amy Jones (28) and Alice Capsey (28). Left-arm spinner Shree Charani (3/25) ensured England remained under pressure. At 126/5 after 17.3 overs, the hosts appeared for a below-par score.
Then came the Kemp storm. The left-hander unleashed a fearless assault. Boundaries flowed almost at will as Kemp hammered an unbeaten 39 off just 13 deliveries, striking four fours and two sixes. She helped England collect 42 runs from the final 15 balls to finish on 168/5.
India's chase began brightly. Shafali Verma raced to 22 off 14 balls, while Smriti Mandhana looked fluent during her 32.
Yastika Bhatia's steady 33 and Harmanpreet Kaur's brisk 28 off 22 balls kept India in contention through the middle overs. Yet England's bowlers never allowed the chase to gain momentum.
India opted to retire out Bhatia in the 15th over in search of acceleration. Instead of sparking a charge, the move triggered a collapse. With wickets tumbling and pressure mounting, India's challenge faded.
Brief scores: England 168/5 in 20 overs (Freya Kemp 39*, Danni Wyatt-Hodge 29, Amy Jones 28; Shree Charani 3/25) beat India 142/9 (Yastika Bhatia 33, Smriti Mandhana 32, Harmanpreet Kaur 28; Charlie Dean 2/20, Kemp 2/15, Lauren Bell 2/33) by 26 runs....
