NAGPUR, April 2 -- A 54-year-old police officer in Akola has been suspended after he allegedly demanded sexual favours from a woman in custody, even suggesting she send her daughter to him in exchange for release, according to the police. The allegations came to light late Tuesday when the 45-year-old detainee lodged a complaint with senior police officers. The situation escalated after a video surfaced on social media purportedly showing senior officers confronting the accused, assistant police sub-inspector Rajesh Jadhav, triggering outrage over abuse of authority within the police force. Superintendent of police (SP) Archit Chandak suspended Jadhav on Wednesday and ordered the registration of a criminal case against him under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges include outraging the modesty of a woman, other serious offences. According to Chandak, the complainant had been arrested by the Akola cyber police in an Rs.80-lakh cheating case. A court had remanded her to two days of police custody, during which she was lodged at the Civil Lines police station. The woman alleged that Jadhav made inappropriate advances towards her late Tuesday night and, upon her refusal, suggested that she send her daughter to him for sexual favours. In return, he allegedly promised to secure her release from custody and also offered her Rs.10,000. Outraged by the proposition, the woman reportedly rebuked the officer.
