After clip goes viral, cabbie who assaulted 70-yr-old held
Thane, June 11 -- A cab driver who was accused of assaulting a senior citizen in Thane, was arrested on Wednesday after a video of the incident went viral.
Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde instructed the Thane Police Commissioner to arrest the driver and invoke attempt-to-murder charges, saying that strict action was necessary to deter attacks on senior citizens.
The incident occurred around 8pm on Tuesday near Jupiter Hospital. The cab driver allegedly spat on the road, following which an elderly man, Sarosh Dastur, 70, objected and requested him not to spit in a public place. The driver, out of rage, allegedly assaulted the senior citizen.
Police said the driver later picked up a stone and attempted to attack the victim, but bystanders intervened.
The video shows the elderly man falling to the ground as his wife attempts to shield him from the assault. Despite her efforts, the driver allegedly continued attacking him.
"We have arrested the driver, Nishant Dhar Shukla, under sections 109 and 352 of the BNS," Pravin Mane, senior police inspector of Vartak Nagar police station, told HT.
