Abhishek attacked in Sonarpur visit
Kolkata, May 31 -- TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday sustained minor injuries after he was attacked with stones and eggs in West Bengal's Sonarpur, where he had gone to meet the families of post-poll violence victims.
Several people were seen roughing up the leader amid intense sloganeering against Banerjee and his aunt, former CM Mamata Banerjee. Some reportedly tried to attack Banerjee by raining blows and kicks on him, prompting intervention by security personnel. He had to resort to wearing a cricket helmet to escape the mob. A large contingent of district police, accompanied by armed central forces, later escorted the TMC leader out, police officers said.
He had gone to Sonarpur to meet the family of TMC worker Sanju Karmakar, who was allegedly killed in post-poll clashes.
"These are all hooligans backed by the BJP," Banerjee told reporters.
He added: "Let my dead body be recovered from here. But I won't quit and abandon Karmakar's parents. Ask the police to send in reinforcements. Send the police a WhatsApp to keep a record. I am drawing the attention of the Calcutta high court and the Governor. There were no police personnel there. I would move high court."
One of the protesters, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: "When the junior doctor was raped at RG Kar Hospital, TMC leaders never went to meet her parents. TMC shielded the accused. Now he has come to stage a drama here..."
Mamata Banerjee hit out at the ruling BJP over the attack. "RULERS BECAME KILLERS- shame on you BJP!" she wrote on X.
The TMC, too, posted on X: "If a sitting Opposition MP can be targeted in broad daylight, what hope is there for ordinary citizens?"
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, slammed the attack as a "disgusting manifestation" of the BJP's "politics of vendetta".
State BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya, however, said: "The BJP is not involved in such activities. What has happened is not expected in a democracy."...
