50-yr-old man in icu after jamun branch smashes skull
MUMBAI, July 9 -- A routine walk to work turned life-threatening for a Virar resident after a branch from a jamun tree crashed onto his head on a busy Andheri East road on Wednesday morning, leaving him with severe skull injuries that required emergency brain surgery.
Adesh Gaykar, 50, remains in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at RN Cooper Hospital after the accident, which occurred around 9am on Nagardas Road as he was walking to his office at Plada Infotech Services Ltd, where he works as a relationship executive.
The incident comes amid a spate of tree and branch collapses triggered by incessant rain. In the 24 hours ending at 8am on Wednesday, Mumbai recorded 168 incidents of tree and branch falls, 51 in the island city, 66 in the western suburbs and 51 in the eastern suburbs.
Gaykar's colleagues, who happened to be nearby, rushed to his aid moments after the branch struck him. They, along with police personnel and a journalist passing through the area, shifted the critically injured man to Cooper Hospital in a police vehicle. Doctors said Gaykar sustained a serious head injury to the cranium, with bleeding from his right ear and swelling around his left eye.
For Gaykar's family, the incident was especially cruel. His wife, Apeksha, said he had been unable to report to work for the previous two days as heavy rains had disrupted suburban train services....
