NAVI MUMBAI, April 24 -- A 47-year-old man died after a speeding scooter knocked him down in a hit-and-run near Ganesh Maidan in Seawoods on Sunday evening, with the rider fleeing the spot, police said. An FIR was registered on Wednesday. The victim, Pundlik Vitthal Sonawane, who lived in Sector 36, was walking in the Karave area around 5:40pm when he was hit from behind. "The accused was riding in a rash and negligent manner and fled the spot without informing the police or arranging medical help for the injured," said Senior Police Inspector Devendra Pol, NRI Coastal Police Station. Sonawane suffered a fracture to the left side of his waist and later succumbed to his injuries. Following a complaint by his relative, Dattaraj Ratnakar Sapkal, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act on Wednesday. No arrests have been made yet and officers are currently scanning CCTV footage to trace the scooter.
