3 killed in Punjab after inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning sewage
Ludhiana, June 2 -- Three workers, including a father and son, died and two others were hospitalised after inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a sewage line inside a hand tool factory in Punjab's Ludhiana in the early hours on Monday, police said. The factory owner has been booked and a judicial inquiry has been ordered into the matter, they added.
According to police, the factory management had hired the father-son duo to clear the sewage system at Deep Tools factory in Industrial Area-A on RK Road at 2 am, where they used to dispose of chemicals used in the electroplating process.
Citing preliminary investigation, Ludhiana deputy commissioner (DC) Himanshu Jain said the workers opened the lid of the sewer line in the factory without any mandatory safety kits or protective gear. They were overcome by toxic fumes building up inside the line, he said, adding that three died on the spot, while the two assisting workers lost consciousness from the gas and were rushed to a local hospital....
