India, Sept. 23 -- Three infants died after a fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) ward of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital in Telangana's Adilabad in the wee hours of Tuesday, officials said. Adilabad collector Rajarshi Shah told reporters that the incident occurred around post-midnight following a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit in the SNCU ward. "As per the preliminary information, the AC suddenly exploded, causing flames and thick smoke to spread through the ward," he said. The collector said at the time, 27 newborns were reportedly undergoing treatment in the unit. While three infants were safe, the remaining 24 children were affected by the incident. "Of them, one died at the spot and two died while undergoing treatment. The remaining 21 children are being provided medical treatment," he said.
