NAVI MUMBAI, July 9 -- A desperate attempt to overtake on Mumbai-Pune Expressway amid heavy rainfall ended in fatality on Wednesday when a speeding taxi crashed into the rear of a stationary trailer near Khalapur in Raigad district, killing two passengers and injuring four others. The collision, which occurred on the Pune-bound carriageway shortly after the Madap tunnel, left the front of the taxi mangled and briefly disrupted traffic on one of the state's busiest highways.
The deceased were identified as Gulam Mustafa Sheikh, 35, a contractor from Malda in West Bengal, and Mohammad Rahman Sheikh, 32, also a resident of Malda.
The injured were identified as Rahim Rahul Sheikh, 26, of Kurla, Ajgar Kitabul, 26, of Bednam Nagar in Bandra, Alik Sheikh, 26, of Kurla, and another passenger who sustained minor injuries. All four are undergoing treatment at MGM Hospital in Kamothe. Preliminary investigations indicate that heavy rain had drastically reduced visibility. Police said the taxi was allegedly travelling at high speed and, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, the driver failed to notice the stationary trailer in time. The Ertiga slammed into the rear of the parked trailer with tremendous force, crushing its front portion.
