2 decades later, ex-corporator booked for fake caste certificate
MUMBAI, April 4 -- Over two decades after the alleged offence, a former Congress corporator was booked on Thursday for allegedly using a fake caste certificate to contest the 2002 BMC elections from a seat reserved for Scheduled Castes in Govandi. Police said the delay in registering the case was because no formal complaint had been filed earlier for an FIR.
The accused, Ramesh Kamble, was disqualified in 2005 after his caste certificate was invalidated following a complaint by his rival Rajendra Waghmare.
Chembur police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code based on a complaint by advocate Chitra Salunkhe.
According to the complaint, Kamble contested the 2002 civic polls on a Congress ticket using a caste certificate claiming he belonged to the Hindu Mahar community. He went on to win the election with 4,721 votes, defeating Rajendra Waghmare of the Republican Party.
Waghmare later approached the caste scrutiny committee, which invalidated Kamble's caste certificate in 2005. The Bombay High Court later upheld the committee's order....
