MUMBAI, Sept. 21 -- A 19-year-old man died after being electrocuted at a BMC-run artificial immersion pond in Jogeshwari East in the early hours of Sunday. The victim, Rohit Bhim Singh Rathod, was inside the Lokmanya Tilak Ganesh Visarjan Talav, near Shyam Nagar Lake, when he suffered an electric shock at around 12.40am. He sustained serious burn injuries and was declared dead upon arrival at the Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital. Preliminary information suggests that a motor pump installed at the immersion site to draw out water was switched on while Rohit was inside the pond, resulting in the electrocution. The exact circumstances leading to the incident are being investigated. Rohit was the only son of his parents. His mother is no more, and his sudden death has left his father devastated. A relative questioned why adequate safety measures had not been put in place at the immersion site and sought accountability for the teenager's death. Rupali Kadam, assistant municipal commissioner, K-North ward, said the BMC was conducting an inquiry. "The boy was not immersing his family's Ganpati but was a contractor's worker. Prima facie, we have learnt that the pump used to draw out water was switched on. But we are still inquiring into the matter," she said. The incident has also brought renewed attention to safety protocols at artificial immersion ponds. Shivaji Khairnar, president of the Shyam Nagarcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandal, said he had raised concerns with the BMC after a person died at an artificial immersion pond four years ago. "I had alerted the BMC to a death in an artificial pond four years ago. In a meeting with the authorities, we had demanded that the contractor do his job properly," he said. Naresh Dahibhavkar, president of the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, said the civic administration should conduct a detailed inquiry and fix responsibility. "The civic administration should conduct a proper inquiry and take action against whoever is responsible. As far as precautions are concerned, the police department takes over after the idol is handed over to them. So how did such an incident happen?" he said.
