Mumbai, July 8 -- A 13-year-old boy died after plunging into the lift shaft of a 12-storey Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building in Kurla's Nehru Nagar on Monday night. Police suspect negligence in the maintenance of the building's elevator. The deceased, Zain Tehsildar, lived on the ninth floor of Shamim Tower. According to residents, the incident occurred around 9 pm while he was playing hide-and-seek with friends on the 10th floor. Residents alleged that Zain was hiding near a lift that had reportedly not stopped on the 10th floor for nearly two years when its door suddenly opened, and he fell into the shaft. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead around 10 pm, hospital dean Dr Pramod Ingale confirmed. Senior police inspector Firojkhan Pathan said an accidental death report has been registered. "It has come to our notice that there appears to have been serious negligence in the maintenance of the building's elevator. It had allegedly been operating only between the ground and 12th floors without stopping on the 10th floor for nearly two years," Pathan said. He added that police are examining whether negligence by those responsible for maintaining the building contributed to the incident. "Once the investigation is complete, an FIR will be registered against those found responsible," he said. Residents claimed the tragedy was "waiting to happen", alleging that repeated complaints about the condition of the lift and the building had gone unaddressed. "We repeatedly raised concerns about the lift and the building's upkeep, but nothing was done. It could have been any one of our children," said resident Saif Khan, 32. Another resident, Shaikh Tarique, alleged that members of the society's managing committee were untraceable after the incident. Adil Shaikh, 36, who helped take Zain to hospital, said the boy suffered multiple fractures and severe injuries in the fall. Responding to the allegations, building managing committee chairman Taufeeq Khan said that residents had failed to pay maintenance charges for years and chose to blame him....
