Mumbai, July 6 -- At least 13 people died as torrential rains coupled with gusty winds lashed the city and suburbs on Sunday. While traffic was largely unaffected, it being Sunday, the winds, with speeds of over 75 kmph, led to over 250 tree fall incidents in the city, causing massive destruction to cars and bikes as well as blocking several roads. With rain of 153 mm recorded in the 24 hours ending 5 pm on Sunday, Mumbai has recorded 74% of July's average rainfall in just four days. The torrential rain brought with it its share of tragedies. Six people, including five minors, died when a chawl structure collapsed in Mankhurd. Meanwhile, tree falls continued to claim lives as two men, aged 18 and 63, died when branches fell on them in Aarey Colony and Kurla respectively. A 35-year-old man in Vashi died when part of a balcony collapsed in Juhugaon. One drowning and one electrocution case each was reported in Vasai-Virar while the body of a 21-year-old man, who had been missing for the last three days, was recovered from Chikhloli dam in Ambernath. In Bhiwandi, a 17-year-old boy who had gone to catch crabs in a river was swept away. The silver lining in the dark clouds was that the heavy rainfall brought relief to the city's water reserves. The stock in seven lakes supplying to Mumbai rose 3.78 percentage points in 24 hours, taking the combined storage to 13.19% of total capacity, providing a much-needed boost to the water supply for the city.
