1 killed in Berlin Pride festival attack; suspect shot dead by police
Berlin, July 27 -- A man allegedly drove a van into a crowd near Berlin's Pride festival on Saturday, killing one person injuring several people before apparently stabbing others with a machete in what German authorities believe was an Islamic extremist terror attack.
The attack late Saturday -- the first such incident to target the German capital's LGBTQ community -- killed one woman and wounded 29 others. The suspect in the attack, 21-year old Abdul Ballout, was shot dead on Sunday during a police operation at an allotment garden complex in the Berlin suburb of Spandau.
Ballout "ran towards them with a bladed weapon", the police said, prompting officers to open fire, "injuring the suspect so that he died at the scene despite attempts to resuscitate him". Earlier, prosecutors had said that Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese origin, had been a supporter of the Islamic State.
Saturday's attack shattered what had been a day of celebration for hundreds of thousands attending Christopher Street Day , one of Europe's largest Pride events.P11...
