THANE, April 3 -- A 51-year-old man attempting to intervene in the alleged sexual harassment and assault of a woman shot dead one of the attackers and injured the other two outside a school in Mumbra on Thursday morning.
Police intercepted the shooter, Jayan Shivanandan Nair, a 51-year-old truck driver, as he fled in a car, and seized the revolver used in the crime. They have also arrested Nair and the woman, Anwara Bibi Sheikh, housekeeping staff at the Sumantai Chavan Hindi Primary School in Kailash Nagarm.
The shooting took place after Anwara reached out to Nair and sought his help during her run-in with the trio, all daily wagers. Both Nair and Anwara have been booked for murder and the Indian Arms Act.
Police said the shooting took place outside the school on the Mumbra bypass road at 11:30am. While Akbar Abdul Sheikh, 29, was shot in the chin and died, Abdul Hasan Sheikh, 56, and Sameer Ahmed Sheikh, 29, sustained bullet injuries to the shoulder and hand and are undergoing treatment at Kalsekar Hospital.

Nair, who was raised by Anwara's family after his parents died, drove to the scene in a car with a loaded revolver. He opened fire at the three men and drove away. Police intercepted Nair at Shil Phata, 4km from the crime scene, and arrested him.
Senior inspector with the Mumbra police, Anil Shinde, said Nair had claimed to have found a bag containing the loaded revolver on the roadside when he was a truck driver in Gujarat. He said he had kept the firearm and used it on Thursday....
