MUMBAI, Nov. 6 -- A 79-year-old retired employee living in Azad Nagar, Andheri, was cheated of Rs.1.10 crore in a cyber fraud after scammers placed him under 'digital arrest'. The victim, Harivandan Dahyabhai Taylor, received a call on September 25 from an individual posing as a police officer from Nashik's Panchavati police station. The fraud falsely claimed an account opened with Taylor's details was linked to a Rs.15-crore money laundering scheme and alleged Taylor had earned a Rs.2-crore commission. The frauds conducted lengthy interrogations over video calls under the guise of a confidential investigation. To prevent Taylor from seeking assistance, they threatened that his family members would be arrested if he disclosed any details to anyone. Frightened by these threats, the retiree remained silent. The scammers then gathered information regarding his bank accounts, investments, and properties, instructing him to transfer funds to four separate bank accounts under the pretext that the money would be refunded following the investigation's completion. Taylor complied, making four transfers totaling Rs.1.10 crore in installments of Rs.29 lakh, Rs.42 lakh, Rs.9.5 lakh, and Rs.30 lakh. Taylor realised he had been scammed only after confiding in an office-bearer of his housing society, who recognized the pattern of cyber crime and advised him to contact the authorities. Taylor blocked the frauds' phone numbers and filed a complaint with the North Region Cyber police station. The police registered a case for cheating, alongside provisions of the Information Technology Act. During the financial trace, investigators discovered that Rs.71 lakh of the defrauded amount had been transferred to an account belonging to Vrushika Agri & Dairytech Private Limited. Police subsequently arrested the company's director, Vrushabnath Dhanpal Tardale, a native of Karnataka, who had opened the bank account to facilitate receiving the illicit funds....
