'Exam failures turned me into a protester'
India, Oct. 3 -- Raj Gharde, 32, from Kandivali, has spent nearly eight years preparing intermittently for government examinations while taking up odd jobs.
A college dropout, he saw a government job as his best chance of overcoming social and economic disadvantages. After repeated unsuccessful attempts, allegations of exam leaks and irregularities struck a personal chord. He joined the CJP protest in July.
"I understood then how such exams were being leaked to benefit a few," he said. The Parliament march that followed, and the lathi charge on protesters, showed him the power of collective action.
"It showed us the power of just coming together," he said. He continued following the agitation and returned on Friday, saying the protest was also about accountability - about what happens when citizens are made to feel powerless and suspicious in their own country. "If one man has caused so much mental distress to millions of citizens, why shouldn't he be held accountable?" he asked....
