Yogi meets family of murdered Dalitstudent, sanctions Rs.5 lakh assistance
Meerut, July 19 -- Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday met the family of murdered Dalit student Lalita Gautam in Ghaziabad and assured them that the government would ensure justice through strict legal action against all those involved in the crime.
As immediate relief, the chief minister sanctioned Rs.5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Discretionary Fund for the victim's family.
He further directed officials to provide a house for Lalita's father and another eligible family member under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana.
Adityanath met her family at the PWD guest house in Ghaziabad, where he expressed grief over the 20-year-old student's murder and reiterated that no effort would be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice, according to an official government statement.
During the meeting, Adityanath instructed officials to take stringent legal action against every person involved in the case. He also ordered action against any police or administrative officer found negligent at any stage of the investigation, while directing investigators to pursue the case effectively to secure the maximum possible punishment for the accused.
In addition, Adityanath instructed the administration to ensure that the family receives benefits under all eligible government welfare schemes on a priority basis, including the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and the public distribution system through ration cards.
Social welfare minister and Meerut district in-charge Asim Arun, along with senior administrative and police officials, was present during the meeting.
According to police, 20-year-old Lalita Gautam, a resident of Meerut, went missing from the city's TP Nagar area on May 15. Her body was recovered two days later from the Rohta area. Police arrested the main accused on May 18, while another individual was subsequently arrested for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence related to the crime.
The murder sparked widespread outrage and protests after police indicated earlier this month that additional persons could have been involved in the killing.
A demonstration held on July 8 turned violent, injuring 11 police personnel.
Police later arrested seven people and registered cases against more than 30 others in connection with the violence.
The case has also drawn the attention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh director general of police and the state's home secretary over allegations that police used excessive force while dealing with protesters.
Political leaders across party lines have visited the victim's family in recent days. Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad, as well as SP president Akhilesh Yadav, separately met Lalita's relatives and assured them of support in their pursuit of justice....
