Woman walks again as 5 spinal tumours removed in two ops
LUCKNOW, Oct. 11 -- In a complex neurosurgical intervention involving the spine, chest and nerves controlling movement in the lower limbs, doctors at Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI), Lucknow, successfully removed five tumours from a 27-year-old Mathura woman who had been unable to walk because of severe weakness in both legs.
The patient has started walking again and is expected to be discharged soon, according to the institute. What makes the case particularly significant is not merely the number of tumours removed, but their locations, their combined pressure on critical nerves and the presence of a tumour extending from the spinal region into the thorax where it was also compressing a lung.
The surgical team had to address these interconnected problems through two operations. The first operation, lasting around seven hours, involved incisions in the spinal and chest regions to remove the tumour. A few days later, the team performed a second operation lasting approximately six hours to remove the remaining four tumours located within the spine. KSSSCI director prof MLB Bhatt said, "The case illustrates the challenges of treating multiple nerve-related tumours when they affect both mobility and an organ in the chest. It also highlights the importance of specialised neurosurgical expertise, carefully planned surgical stages and postoperative rehabilitation in patients whose neurological function has already been compromised." He congratulated the neurosurgery team for successfully carrying out what he described as a highly challenging surgery.
The institute's medical superintendent Dr Varun Vijay said the treatment was provided free under Ayushman Bharat. He estimated that the two procedures could cost Rs.6 lakh to Rs.7 lakh at a private hospital.
Professor Vijendra Kumar, chief medical superintendent and head of neurosurgery at KSSSCI, led the treatment plan. Dr Amit Upadhyay and Dr Ashish Mishra were part of the neurosurgery team, while Dr Asim Rasheed and Dr Ruchi Saxena were part of the anaesthesia team....
