MEERUT, Aug. 24 -- A bitter dispute over the custody of two young children led to the murder of a 26-year-old woman whose body was found dumped in a sugarcane field in Sardhana, police said on Sunday. Police have arrested the victim's second husband, his mother, his first wife and his brother, while another suspect remains at large. The victim, identified as Sheeba, a resident of Sial village in the Bhawanpur area, was allegedly strangled inside a car on August 19. Her body was later abandoned in a sugarcane field in Daulatpur village along the Kushawali-Jwalagarh link road, where the accused allegedly struck her face and head with a brick to impede identification. Sheeba's family identified her on August 21 after seeing photos released on social media. According to police, tensions between Sheeba and her second husband, Sadik, escalated over her two children from a previous marriage, seven-year-old Mohammad Saad and five-year-old Navia. While Sheeba insisted on keeping both children with her, Sadik demanded that only the boy reside with them. Family members told police that Sadik had given Sheeba triple talaq on June 2, after which she moved into a rented accommodation arranged by her father. On July 30, Sadik allegedly took Sheeba and her son away, leaving her daughter behind. On August 19, Sadik and his relatives allegedly forced Sheeba into a car. During the journey, Sheeba managed to call her brother Junaid to report that she was being forcibly taken toward Dehradun before her phone was broken during a scuffle. Following the identification of the body, police registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by Junaid naming five individuals. Circle officer Ashutosh Kumar confirmed that Sadik, his mother Wasila, his first wife Asiya and his brother Shadab have been arrested.
