BAHRAICH, May 26 -- A 40-year-old woman was killed in a tiger attack inside the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) on Monday while collecting firewood, triggering panic among villagers living along the forest fringe. The incident took place in Amritpur Puraina village under the Murtiha Range of the sanctuary. The deceased, Rita Gautam, wife of Subhash Gautam, had entered the forest around 9.30am with other women when a tiger suddenly emerged from dense vegetation and attacked her. Villagers rushed to the spot with sticks and farming tools after hearing her screams. The tiger reportedly fled into the forest as villagers approached, but Rita had already died from severe injuries to her neck, face and head. Divisional forest officer Apoorv Dixit said pugmarks, a water bottle and bundles of firewood were recovered from the site.
