Woman dead after 'healer' twists neck to treat chronic pain: Police
Haldwani, Oct. 4 -- A 24-year-old woman was killed after a self-professed "healer" allegedly twisted her neck while trying to treat persistent neck pain in Haldwani on Saturday, police said, adding that they were yet to register a case.
The woman was identified as Meenakshi. The accused, identified as Naeem Pehalwan, and his associates allegedly shut shop and fled after the incident. Meenakshi's husband told police that the family chose to take her to the "healer" after she had complained of neck pain for over three months, with visits to Dr Susheela Tiwari Hospital and another "healer" based in Mukteshwar did not yield any tangible result.
On Saturday, he took Meenakshi and their two children to Pahelwan's shop at Gurudwara Lane on Kaladhungi Road. The family alleged that the healer claimed he could cure her condition and suddenly twisted her neck while attempting to treat her. Meenakshi subsequently became unconscious and did not respond, police said. The husband alleged that the healer kept her body at the shop for around 20 minutes and advised the family to take her to hospital only after she failed to regain consciousness. She was then taken to Base Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. "The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An FIR will be registered against the accused after receiving a written complaint from the family," said SP Harbans Singh.
Nainital chief medical officer Dr Rashmi Pant said a health department team inspected the shop on Kaladhungi Road, but it was found closed. Officials later visited Base Hospital to collect information and examine the deceased's medical records.
"Directives have been issued to accelerate action against illegally operating clinics and people practising medicine without valid qualifications," she said....
