PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 9 -- A 26-year-old woman from Prayagraj was brutally assaulted by her husband and in-laws after she confronted them about her husband's alleged second marriage. The incident took place on Saturday night under Dhoomanganj police station area. The victim, Sonia, a resident of Naini ADA Colony, Prayagraj told police that she had been facing dowry harassment since her marriage to Ashish Bhartiya (30) five years ago. According to her statement, the harassment worsened after she gave birth to a daughter four years ago. Sonia alleged that her in-laws thrashed her and threw her out of the house, after which she returned to live with her parents and had no contact from her husband's family. Recently, Sonia learned that Ashish had secretly married another woman. She informed her family members and visited her in-laws' home along with her mother and other female relatives. Sonia said that upon seeing her, Ashish's second wife locked herself inside a room and called Ashish. "When Ashish arrived, he became furious. He started abusing me and then attacked me," Sonia said in her complaint. She alleged that Ashish thrashed her with sticks and rods, causing a deep head injury. When her mother and other women accompanying her tried to intervene, they were also assaulted. Sonia's mother Gudiya Devi, along with two other relatives, sustained injuries in the attack. On receiving information, Dhoomanganj police reached the spot and rescued the women, who were taken to the hospital. One of the relatives is reported to be in critical condition. SHO of Dhoomanganj police station Rajesh Upadhyay said that an FIR has been registered against Ashish Bhartiya, his brother Chandan, another relative Gulshan, several women from the family, and unidentified persons.
