Woman accuses Harak Singh Rawat of rape
Dehradun, Nov. 8 -- A 39-year-old woman from Assam has accused Congress leader and former Uttarakhand cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat of raping her in 2003, prompting Dehradun Police to order an inquiry into her fresh complaint filed on November 5. Rawat has dismissed the allegations as a political conspiracy orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The woman, who was 16 at the time of the alleged assault, had earlier accused Rawat of fathering her child.
A subsequent Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and DNA test returned negative results, following which the agency filed a closure report. She also lodged a rape FIR against him in 2016 at Delhi's Safdarjung police station.
In her fresh complaint to Uttarakhand DGP Deepam Seth, she sought a new DNA test of her 23-year-old son to establish his paternity. "Today, my son is 23 years old and struggling for his identity," she alleged.
Dehradun SSP Pramendra Dobhal said the complaint had been received and assigned to a woman deputy superintendent of police for investigation.
Rawat denied the allegations, claiming the BJP had brought the woman to Dehradun ahead of the upcoming elections. "The BJP is terrified...they are fearing loss in upcoming elections," Rawat said.
Meanwhile, BJP Mahila Morcha state president Ruchi Bhatt said the allegations against Rawat exposed "anti woman face and hypocrisy" of the Congress party....
