Woman, 2 daughters climb water tank, demand action against land encroachers
GORAKHPUR, July 13 -- A 40-year-old woman climbed a nearly 100-foot-high water tank located behind the Sadar tehsil at the district headquarters on Sunday along with her two daughters, demanding justice over an alleged land encroachment dispute. The incident triggered panic and drew a large crowd to the spot.
The woman, identified as Krishna Kanti Singh, a resident of Mustafabad village under Sahjanwa tehsil, climbed the tank with her daughters, Basundhara Singh (12) and Aanshi Singh (10).
Police from the Cantt police station, along with district administration officials, launched a rescue operation and safely brought all three down after prolonged persuasion.
Krishna Kanti Singh alleged that some influential persons in her village were attempting to illegally occupy her family's land and that despite repeated complaints, neither the Sahjanwa police nor the tehsil administration had taken effective action.
According to her, her husband, Rahul Singh, had earlier submitted a complaint stating that agricultural land bearing Arazi No. 394, measuring 6.6530 hectares in Mustafabad village, belonged to his share.
She claimed that revenue records and a report by the Assistant Consolidation Officer (ACO) confirmed that the recorded tenure holders were Satyendra Pratap Singh, Rahul Singh, and Batukeshwar Singh, while the names of the alleged encroachers did not appear in the official records.
She further alleged that although the family had secured possession of the land after a prolonged legal process, the opposing party continued to threaten them and had issued death threats. A fresh complaint was submitted to the Sahjanwa police on July 3 and marked to sub-inspector Ramesh Yadav for inquiry, but she alleged that no effective action had been taken.
After the matter reached district magistrate Deepak Meena and senior superintendent of police Dr Kaustubh, senior district officials intervened and assured the family that the issue would be addressed promptly.
"The matter has been taken seriously. Sahjanwa tehsil and Sahjanwa police have been directed to conduct a fair inquiry and ensure resolution of the dispute within two days. The family has also been assured of security," district administration officials said.
The administration said the situation was brought under control without any injuries, adding that further action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry....
