MEERUT, Oct. 27 -- A wild elephant that had strayed from Shivalik forests into the agricultural fields of Saharanpur district's Sundarpur village was electrocuted to death after coming in contact with low-hanging high-tension power lines on Saturday, confirmed officials. The elephant is believed to have entered the village in search of water, they added. According to villagers, the incident occurred late on Friday night when the elephant entered the farmlands of Sundarpur where high-tension wires were hanging dangerously low. Early on Saturday morning, farmers discovered the carcass in the fields and immediately reported the matter to the forest department. Following the alert, Saharanpur divisional forest officer (DFO) Love Singh arrived at the site along with a forest team. Authorities confirmed that the elephant's carcass had been sent for a post-mortem examination. The DFO said further action will be taken once the autopsy report is received. Meanwhile, the villagers alleged that the high-tension wires in the area had been hanging abnormally low for a long time. Despite several complaints to the electricity department, no corrective action was taken so far, they claimed.
