Meerut, July 30 -- District administrations across western Uttar Pradesh have completed extensive preparations to ensure the safe and smooth movement of millions of Kanwariyas, as the holy month of Sawan begins on Thursday (July 30). Authorities in Meerut, Bareilly and Muzaffarnagar have strengthened security, traffic management, food safety, medical assistance and surveillance systems, while appealing to devotees to cooperate with officials for a peaceful pilgrimage. Meerut, one of the busiest transit hubs on the Kanwar route connecting devotees to Haridwar, is preparing for an unprecedented influx of pilgrims. District authorities have reinforced infrastructure along the pilgrimage routes. Security arrangements include temporary police stations, police outposts, extensive CCTV surveillance, drone monitoring and barricading at strategic locations. Traffic diversions have been implemented, with heavy vehicles restricted from major routes, including NH-58, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Ganga Canal roads from late on July 29. One lane on selected highways has been reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas. Authorities have also established health camps, ambulance services including bike ambulances, drinking water points and emergency snakebite management facilities. In Bareilly, authorities have introduced a technology-based security framework covering Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur districts. The region has been divided into three super zones, nine zones, 28 sectors and 104 sub-sectors to facilitate effective crowd management and rapid response. Around 8,000 police personnel will be deployed across the zone, supported by an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) established at the Bareilly Police Lines to monitor the Kanwar routes. SP Traffic Akmal Khan said a comprehensive route and diversion plan has been prepared for the yatra. Authorities have also deployed Anti-Romeo squads and created dedicated facilities for women Kanwariyas. Around 48 police assistance centres have been established across Bareilly district, supported by medical camps and ambulance services. At major ghats, including Kachhla, SDRF personnel, PAC teams, divers and life jackets have been deployed to strengthen water safety measures. Transport authorities have arranged additional buses to Haridwar and other major pilgrimage destinations. Security arrangements in Muzaffarnagar have been elevated to the highest level with the deployment of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and several specialised security units. On Wednesday, at Shiv Chowk, SSP Verma and SP City Jain welcomed Kanwariyas by showering flower petals on them and extended wishes for a safe pilgrimage. Authorities have advised Kanwariyas to carry valid identification, follow designated pilgrimage routes, adhere to prescribed sound limits of 75 decibels and cooperate with security personnel. Special arrangements are being made at the district level with police in Kasganj, especially prepared and focussing on eight identified routes to be taken by 'kanwariyas' coming from Rajasthan and MP. Superintendent of Police (SP), Kasganj, OP Singh said, "About 12 to 13 lakh devotees not only from UP but also from nearby states of MP and Rajasthan are to reach the ghats in Kasganj where the Ganga flows. They carry holy water through the route of Hathras and Etah". "CCTV cameras are being installed and Kanwar routes are being examined. The police control room is to remain functional round the month. Total area has been demarcated in 9 zones and 21 sectors with watch towers installed at ghats where PAC Flood company has been stationed with professional divers' said SP Kashanj. In Agra, the commissioner of police, Deepak Kumar, held a coordination meeting with the district magistrate in attendance.
