Vrindavan widows prepare Rakhis for PM
AGRA, Aug. 17 -- Continuing a tradition, Vrindavan's widow mothers will send 1,100 special Rakhis to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Raksha Bandhan. The colourful Rakhis, featuring photographs of "brother Modi", have been handcrafted by elderly widows living in various ashrams in Vrindavan.
Nitya Pathak, executive convenor of Sulabh International, said the women spend several days making and decorating the Rakhis. Five mothers will travel to Delhi to present Rakhis and sweets to the Prime Minister.
Hundreds of widows on Sunday celebrated Raksha Bandhan at the historic Gopinath Temple, where the Rakhis were decorated and packed.
For generations, widows in Vrindavan were expected to lead secluded lives and stay away from festive celebrations....
