VARANASI, Oct. 11 -- The Varanasi Nagar Nigam has launched a special cleaning drive to remove large amounts of silt left behind by receding flood waters along the Ganga ghats. A comprehensive plan has been prepared to ensure the proper cleaning of all the affected ghats. Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal has assigned responsibilities to officers to ensure regular monitoring of the silt removal work. All 85 Ganga ghats, stretching from Adikeshav Ghat to Ravidas Ghat and Ramghat, have been divided into different zones and clusters. Supervisory and nodal officers have been appointed to oversee the cleaning operations in their respective areas. The supervisory officers have been instructed to inspect their assigned ghats every day. They must also share geo-tagged photographs of the cleaning work in the designated 'Officers Group' to monitor progress and ensure accountability. The municipal commissioner has directed all officers to carry out on-site inspections and submit a progress report within three days. He has also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found negligent or careless in carrying out the cleaning work. To supervise the cleaning arrangements at the various ghats, responsibilities have been assigned to additional municipal commissioners Durgesh Kumar Mishra, Vinod Kumar Gupta and Pawan Kumar Gupta; assistant municipal commissioner Anil Yadav; zonal officers Indra Vijay, Manoj Kumar Singh and Mrityunjay Narayan Mishra; in-charge city health officer Sandeep Bhargava; zonal sanitation officers Kshitij Mishra and Rajiv Kumar; and joint municipal commissioner Krishnachandra. The officers have been instructed to ensure that all silt is completely removed from the steps and platforms of the ghats.
