Villagers block Prayagraj-Rewa NH over compensation demands
PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 23 -- Tension prevailed on the Prayagraj-Rewa National Highway on Saturday evening after villagers staged a road blockade near Dihwa Harro village by placing the bodies of three women labourers who were killed in a tractor-trolley accident, disrupting traffic movement for several hours.
Police and administrative officials rushed to the spot and spent hours attempting to pacify the protesters. However, the relatives of the deceased and villagers remained firm on their demands and refused to remove the blockade. According to reports, the accident occurred on Friday morning when around 30 labourers from Sonra village under Harro Gram Panchayat were travelling in a tractor-trolley to Surval Sahni village for paddy transplantation work. Near the Surval Sahni turn, the vehicle reportedly went out of control while trying to avoid a motorcyclist. The tractor-trolley struck a divider and overturned. Three women labourers died in the accident, while nearly 20 others sustained injuries. The bodies of the deceased were brought back to the village around 5pm on Saturday after post-mortem examinations. Family members, however, refused to perform the last rites, said officials. Soon after, dozens of villagers placed the bodies on the highway, blocking traffic in protest. SDM Shikha Sankhwar, ACP (Bara) Ved Vyas Mishra, ACP Abdus Salam and Bara SHO Sanjay Rai reached the spot along with police personnel. Despite repeated efforts by police and administrative officials to persuade the protesters, the villagers continued their agitation and remained adamant on their demands till late Saturday evening....
