VARANASI, Sept. 11 -- A routine morning walk turned into a traumatic scene in Varanasi on Thursday when a 52-year-old businessman allegedly shot himself in the head with his licensed pistol, police said. The man was rushed to the BHU Trauma Centre, where he remains in critical condition. The incident took place on Azamgarh Road, around 30 metres from his home near the Pandeypur intersection, under the Cantt police station area. Police said The man had stepped out for his morning walk when he shot himself. Hearing the gunshot, neighbours and family members rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital. The bullet remains lodged in his head, police said. The reason behind the suicide attempt is not yet known. Family members told police they were shocked by the incident and could not understand what prompted him to take the extreme step. They said everything at home had appeared normal. The businessman managed the family's saree business in Pandeypur. He was the second among three siblings, all of whom are prominent businessmen in the area. Assistant commissioner of Police, Cantt, Pragya Pathak said the incident was being investigated. A forensic team visited the spot and collected evidence.
